Plain English Summary

2/10 complexity

This Airworthiness Directive mandates safety inspections for owners and operators of Piper PA-28 series aircraft (light planes commonly used for training and private aviation).

What it requires:

Inspect for corrosion at the stabilator attach fittings — the steel brackets that connect the moveable horizontal tail surface to the fuselage
Follow specific procedures laid out in Piper Service Bulletin No. 856
Timing: Conduct the first inspection at the next scheduled maintenance check after 7 May 1987, then repeat every 12 months

Why it matters: The manufacturer identified severe corrosion occurring between the steel attachment brackets and the fuselage structure. This rust could weaken the critical connection between the tail and the aircraft body, potentially causing loss of control.

Who is affected: Owners and operators of all Piper PA-28 models listed in Piper Service Bulletin No. 856.
