Plain English Summary

2/10 complexity

What this is: A mandatory safety rule (Airworthiness Directive) requiring specific Piper aircraft owners to modify a cockpit control.

Who it affects: Owners and operators of particular Piper PA-28 models (Cherokee and Arrow variants) with specific serial numbers:

PA-28-180, PA-28R-180, PA-28R-200, and PA-28-235 aircraft
Only those with serial numbers listed in the directive (e.g., 28-4378 to 28-5858 for the PA-28-180)

What you must do: Modify the electric pitch trim switch (a control that adjusts the aircraft's nose-up/nose-down attitude) according to Piper Service Bulletin No. 556. This is a technical modification to the aircraft's trim system.

When: Complete the modification within 100 hours of flight time after 31 October 1977. If your aircraft was already flying before this date, you had a 100-hour "grace period" to comply.

Why it matters: Airworthiness Directives are legally binding safety orders. Non-compliance means the aircraft is not considered airworthy and cannot legally fly.
