Plain English Summary

2/10 complexity

What this does: This is a safety directive requiring owners of specific Piper PA-28 aircraft to install a shear pin (a safety device designed to break under excessive load) on the automatic pilot roll servo mechanism.

Who it affects: Owners and operators of Piper PA-28 series aeroplanes fitted with an Edo-Aire Mitchell Automatic Pilot model AK085E.

What you must do: If your aircraft matches the description above, you must have the shear pin installed according to the technical instructions found in:

Piper Service Letter No. 695, or
Edo-Aire Mitchell Service Letter ML38

When: The work must be completed within 200 hours of flight time ("time in service") after 30 September 1974.

Why it matters: This modification prevents potential failures in the autopilot system that could affect aircraft control.
