What this is: A mandatory safety rule (called an Airworthiness Directive) issued by the Civil Aviation Safety Authority for specific Piper Comanche aircraft.

Who it affects: Owners and operators of Piper PA-24 model aircraft with serial numbers 24-1 through 24-5047.

What you must do: Remove the left and right stabilator (the moving part of the tail that controls the plane's up/down movement) attachment bolts and check them for rust or corrosion.

When:

First inspection: Within 100 hours of flying time after 31 January 1974
Repeat inspections: Every 3 months after that
Until: The bolts are replaced according to the manufacturer's Service Letter No. 667 (at which point the repeated inspections stop)

Why it matters: Corroded attachment bolts could break, causing the stabilator to detach or jam. This creates a serious risk of losing control of the aircraft.

Amdt 1

Stabilator Attachment Bolts - Inspection 3/74

Applicability: All model PA-24 with S/Nos. 24-1 to 24-5047.

Requirement: Remove the LH and RH stabilator attachment bolts and inspect bolts for corrosion.

Compliance: Within 100 hours time in service after 31 January 1974 and there- after at intervals not exceeding 3 months until replaced in accordance with Piper SL No. 667.
