What it does
This instrument is an amendment to Airworthiness Directive AD/PA-24/14 that requires recurring inspection of exhaust and related components on specified Piper PA-24 (Comanche) series aeroplanes and sets conditions under which the repetitive inspections may be discontinued. The document states applicability, the specific inspection requirement, the compliance timing, and the effective date. The operative requirement is stated under the heading "Requirement": operators must "Inspect the engine exhaust muffler and shroud assembly (including the internal baffle tube and tail pipe), carburettor heat shroud and air duct, support braces, clamps and brackets, exhaust stacks and manifolds in accordance with USA AD 68-05-01." The instrument also identifies parts and modifications that, if installed, allow the operator to discontinue the repetitive inspections: hollow muffler part numbers P/N 24506 or P/N 26385 for PA-24 aircraft; hollow muffler P/N 24506 or P/N 26385 plus muffler support Kit No. 756775 or Kit No. 757058 for PA-24-250 aircraft; and a barrier device installed in each muffler in accordance with Piper Service Letter No. 518 for PA-24-260 aircraft. The compliance timing is specified as "At each scheduled inspection for issue of a maintenance release following the date of effectivity of this Amendment." The Amendment declares an effective date of 20 November 2008, and is signed by a delegate of the Civil Aviation Safety Authority.
Mechanically, the Amendment changes two features of the previously applicable directive: it adopts USA AD 68-05-01 as the inspection standard, and it changes the interval from a stated 100-hour period in earlier text to an inspection tied to the maintenance release schedule. The instrument also narrows applicability: it excludes certain PA-24-260 serial-numbered aeroplanes (24-4783, 24-4804 and subsequent) and excludes PA-24-400 from the inspection requirement, mirroring the scope of the USA AD it adopts. The "Background" heading records that the original AD from 1963 referenced Piper Service Letter No. 324B and that Amendment 1 in 1969 moved to Service Letter No. 324C; this Amendment specifies compliance with USA AD 68-05-01 and records the shift in compliance timing from "each 100 hours" to "each maintenance release inspection."
