Plain English Summary

2/10 complexity

What this does: This safety directive mandates regular inspections of critical bolts that attach the horizontal tail control surface (the "stabilator") on specific Piper twin-engine aircraft.

Who it affects: Owners and operators of Piper PA-23 Apache and Aztec aeroplanes with serial numbers 27-1 through 27-4654.

What you must do:

Remove the left and right stabilator attachment bolts
Inspect them for corrosion (rust)
Complete the first inspection within 100 flight hours after 31 January 1974
Repeat the inspection every 3 months until the bolts are replaced according to Piper Service Letter No. 667

Why it matters: Corroded attachment bolts could lead to structural failure of the tail section, potentially causing loss of aircraft control. This directive ensures potentially weakened bolts are identified before they fail.
