Plain English Summary

1/10 complexity

What this is: A mandatory safety inspection requirement (called an Airworthiness Directive) issued by the Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) under aviation safety law.

Who it affects: Owners and operators of Piper PA-23 Apache and Aztec aeroplanes.

What it requires: You must perform a visual inspection of a specific structural part—the auxiliary front spar (identified by part number 16010)—at the outboard end near rib 16042. You are looking for vertical cracks, particularly around the bend radius (the curved section where the metal bends).

When: Within 50 hours of flight time after 4 January 1971.

Why it matters: Cracks in this spar could weaken the aircraft's structure and potentially create safety risks. This directive ensures operators check for this specific manufacturing or wear-related defect.
