Plain English Summary

2/10 complexity

What this is: An Airworthiness Directive (a mandatory safety order issued by the Civil Aviation Safety Authority, or CASA).

What it requires: Owners and operators of Piper PA-22 aircraft (Tri-Pacer and Colt models) must immediately inspect the rivets located in the aileron hinge bearing blocks — these are the metal fittings that allow the wing control surfaces (ailerons) to pivot.

How to comply: Follow the technical instructions contained in Piper Service Letter No. 216A immediately (the law uses the word "forthwith," which means without delay).

Why it matters: Loose or damaged rivets in these hinge blocks could impair the pilot's ability to control the aircraft's roll, creating a safety risk during flight.
