Plain English Summary

2/10 complexity

This Airworthiness Directive (AD) mandates a safety modification for Piper PA-11 (Cub) and J3 series aircraft regarding their wing fuel tank caps.

Who it affects: Owners and operators of these aircraft that have replaced their wing fuel tank caps since 1 June 1976 with either:

Part number 15296-02, or
Part number 60707-02 (modified per Piper Service Bulletin No. 522)

What you must do: If your aircraft meets the above criteria, you must perform the modification specified in Piper Service Bulletin No. 573. This involves technical changes to ensure the fuel cap seals and vents properly, preventing fuel leaks or contamination.

When: The modification must be completed within 100 hours of flight time after 31 May 1978.

Why it matters: Fuel tank caps that don't seal correctly can lead to fuel loss, fuel contamination, or fire hazards. This directive ensures specific replacement caps meet airworthiness standards for safe operation.
