What it does
This instrument is an Airworthiness Directive (AD) addressed to operators of Bell OH-58A (Bell 206A-1) series helicopters that have specific main rotor pitch link assemblies installed. It prescribes recurring visual inspections, mandatory replacement before further flight if defects are found, application of a specified corrosion preventative compound (or an equivalent), and post-intervention main-rotor tracking. The text identifies the affected parts as main rotor blade pitch link assemblies part numbers 206-010-330 and 206-010-342 (as applicable) and directs how and when inspections and maintenance actions must be performed (see Applicability; Requirement; Compliance in the source).
Mechanically, the AD changes operator and maintenance-provider behaviour by imposing: (a) a defined inspection method , inspect the ends and outside diameter surface of each tube using a 3x or higher magnifying glass; (b) a mandatory replacement rule , replace any corroded or cracked tubes detected during an inspection before further flight; (c) an afterwork maintenance step , if tubes are replaced or adjusted, track the main rotor blades in accordance with the appropriate maintenance and overhaul information manual; and (d) a corrosion-protection step , apply corrosion preventative compound MIL-C-16173 Grade 2, or equivalent, to specified mating faces, thread areas and nut surfaces on each pitch link assembly (see Requirement).
The AD sets a short initial compliance window followed by a recurring interval: unless the initial inspection is already accomplished, complete the first inspection within the next 25 hours time in service; thereafter inspect at intervals not to exceed 50 hours time in service (see Compliance). The instrument became effective on 28 August 2008 and is signed by a CASA delegate, David Villiers, dated 14 July 2008 (see effective date and signature in the source).
