What it does
This Airworthiness Directive (AD) requires inspection and, where indicated, replacement of specific pylon support link assemblies on Bell OH-58A (Bell 206A-1) series helicopters that have particular part numbers installed. The Directive applies where pylon support links part number 206-031-508-5 or 206-031-508-7 are installed (Applicability). It mandates two discrete inspection requirements drawn from a Bell Helicopter Service Bulletin and specifies immediate remedial action where certain dimensional or structural defects are found.
Mechanically, the Directive imposes these steps. First, an inspection per Part II of Bell Helicopter Service Bulletin No. 206-01-73-2 Revision A, or a later FAA-approved revision, must be carried out. If the bearing inner race measures more than 1.255 inches in diameter, or any crack is present in the link, the link assembly must be replaced before further flight (Requirement 1). Second, inspections per Part III of the same service bulletin, or later FAA-approved revision, must be performed; any cracking detected during those inspections also requires replacement before further flight (Requirement 2). The Directive provides a terminating action: installation of pylon support links part number 206-031-589 ends the AD’s inspection and replacement requirements (Requirement 2, terminating action). The AD becomes effective on 28 August 2008 and sets initial compliance timeframes: the first inspection (Requirement 1) must be completed within 10 hours time-in-service after the Directive’s effective date, unless already accomplished; the Part III inspections must begin initially within 25 hours time-in-service after compliance with Requirement 1 and then recur at intervals not to exceed 25 hours time-in-service (Compliance).
The Directive explicitly references FAA AD 73-08-03 Amdt 39-1622 in a note (Note). The stated purpose in the text is limited to safety prevention: the actions are intended to prevent possible failure of certain pylon support links (Background). The Directive does not reproduce the inspection procedures; operators must follow the identified parts of Bell Helicopter Service Bulletin No. 206-01-73-2 Revision A, or a later FAA-approved revision, to perform the inspections and determine acceptability or need for replacement.
