What it does
This instrument is an airworthiness directive (AD) issued by the Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) under its delegated powers under the Civil Aviation Act 1988 and associated regulations. It mandates a specific engineering modification to the digital engine control unit (DECU) software on Makila 1A2 turboshaft engines, and imposes a compatibility rule for engines installed on the same helicopter. The directive is formally designated AD/MAKILA/7 Amdt 1.
The substantive requirement is twofold. First, operators must replace the DECU with a unit incorporating Modification TU 244C, which upgrades the software from version 9 to version 11. This replacement must be performed in accordance with Turbomeca Mandatory Service Bulletin No A298 73 0244 Update 1 dated 30 March 2007 update. The compliance date for this requirement is no later than 30 November 2008. Second, from the effective date of this amendment (5 July 2007), engines post Modification TU 244C may only be installed on a helicopter if the other engine is either post Modification TU 244C or post Modification TU 230C (the previous software version). This pairing requirement applies immediately and creates an operational constraint on engine configuration.
The directive replaces an earlier version (original issue effective 13 April 2006) and updates the reference to the service bulletin, while maintaining both the software upgrade and the compatibility rule. Mechanically, the AD does not require removal of serviceable engines that are not yet modified; it only requires compliance by the deadline. However, the pairing requirement effectively prevents operators from mixing a modified engine with an unmodified engine that has not received Modification TU 230C. This forces a matching of engine software states whenever an engine is installed or replaced.
