What it does
AD/MAKILA/14 mandates the replacement of certain comparator/selector (CS) boards fitted to the Engine Control Units (ECUs) of Makila 1A and 1A1 turboshaft engines. The directive imposes two distinct requirements with staggered compliance deadlines. Requirement 1 is a near‑term measure: if both TU250 CS boards on the same helicopter belong to the suspect batch (serial numbers 241 EL to 1192 EL) and each has accumulated fewer than 200 hours operating time since new, then at least one of those boards must be replaced with a board from outside the suspect batch. This must be done within 50 hours time in service from the effective date of the directive (12 May 2009). Requirement 2 is a longer‑term measure: all TU250 CS boards from the suspect batch must be replaced with boards not from that batch, regardless of the operating time of the other board. This replacement must occur during the next 500‑hour routine inspection, or before 30 November 2009, whichever comes first. Compliance with Requirement 2 is met if the replacement was already done before the effective date, using Turboméca Mandatory Service Bulletin (MSB) 298 73 0810 Version A dated 12 February 2008. Later versions of either MSB approved by the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) are also acceptable. The directive therefore compels affected operators to inspect their ECUs, determine whether both boards fall within the suspect batch and within the low‑time threshold, and then carry out the replacement in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions. The directive creates a mandatory obligation under Australian airworthiness law, failure of which renders the aircraft unairworthy and exposes the operator to enforcement action by the Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA).
