What it does
This Airworthiness Directive (AD) directs inspection and, where indicated, repair and modification of the forward engine beam shear webs on certain Gates Learjet Model 35/36 series aeroplanes. The AD is issued under subregulation 39.1(1) of CASR 1998, and requires specified actions to correct an identified unsafe condition in the aircraft or aeronautical product mentioned in the applicability section. The AD imposes (a) a detailed inspection using a probe and a general visual inspection of the shear webs (including modification of the drag angles), (b) measurement of electrical resistance during the detailed inspection, and (c) follow-on actions that depend on measured resistance and on observed crack openings, all to be accomplished in accordance with Bombardier Service Bulletins (SBs) identified in the AD.
Mechanically, the AD does the following (from the Requirement text):
- Requires the detailed probe inspection and general visual inspection of forward engine beam shear webs as set out in Bombardier SB 35/36-51-3 (dated 1 February 2001) (Requirement 1).
- Requires follow-on actions depending on resistance measured during the probe inspection: if resistance is less than 0.110 milliohm, repeat the inspections required by Requirement 1; if resistance is 0.110 milliohm or more but less than 0.150 milliohm, repair and modify the shear web per SB 35/36-51-4 Revision 1 or Revision 2; if resistance is 0.150 milliohm or more, repair and modify per SB 35/36-51-4 Revision 1 or Revision 2 (Requirement 2 and subparagraphs).
- Requires follow-on actions after the general visual inspection in accordance with SB 35/36-51-3, with a specific escalation where any crack opening found is more than 0.030-inch: in that case the AD requires following SB 35/36-51-3 paragraphs 2.C.(16)(a) and 2.C.(16)(b), repair per a method approved by the Manager, Wichita Aircraft Certification Office (ACO), FAA, and to accomplish the terminating action specified in Requirement 4 (Requirement 3).
