Plain English Summary

3/10 complexity

This directive requires owners/operators of specific Learjet 35 and 36 serials (35‑001 to 35‑661; 36‑001 to 36‑063) to install Learjet Airplane Modification Kit AMK 90‑5 (cockpit map light wiring) before any flight after 4 July 1993. It responds to a documented in‑flight fire risk from chafing wiring; compliance restores legal airworthiness and imposes direct parts, labour and downtime costs on operators.

Light Wire Protection

2/93

Applicability: All Learjet 35 and 36 series airplanes with serial numbers 35-001 to 35-661 inclusive and 36-001 to 36-063 inclusive.

Requirement: Modify the cockpit map light wiring in accordance with Learjet Airplane Modification Kit AMK 90-5 dated 11 October 1991.

Note: FAA AD 92-19-12 Amendment 39-8370 refers.

Compliance: Prior to further flight after 4 July 1993.

Background: The FAA has received a report of an in-flight fire on a Learjet Model 24 series airplane caused by chafing of the cockpit map light wires. The electrical arcing against the oxygen mask tubing caused burn-through and the subsequent fire.

Compliance with this Directive decreases the likelihood of an in-flight fire caused by map light wire chafing.
