What it does
This instrument is an Airworthiness Directive (AD) amending AD/LC40/2 to require specific inspections, repairs, and a flight manual amendment for Columbia (formerly Lancair) LC40, LC41 and LC42 series aeroplanes because of reported contamination of linear bearings. The AD is captioned AD/LC40/2 Amdt 1, dated 15 December 2008 and becomes effective on 19 December 2008. Its stated safety purpose is to prevent jamming in the aileron and elevator control systems caused by foreign object debris in the aileron and elevator linear bearings, a failure that could result in loss of control. The amendment changes the serial numbers of affected aircraft and adds Cessna approved data to the list of approved data for compliance.
Mechanically, the AD imposes five discrete requirements, identified in the AD text as Requirement 1 through Requirement 5:
- Requirement 1: Insert Appendix A of Columbia Mandatory Service Bulletin SB-07-002 dated 14 March 2007, or Appendix A of Cessna Mandatory Service Bulletin SB-07-002D dated 29 May 2008, into the Limitations section of the Airplane Flight Manual (AFM). The AD states that the operator holding at least a private pilot certificate may perform this AFM amendment, and that an entry must be made in the aircraft records showing compliance.
- Requirement 2: Access and inspect aileron and elevator linear bearings on both wings for foreign object debris, following the referenced Columbia or Cessna Mandatory Service Bulletin and FAA approved maintenance procedures; the appropriate maintenance manual contains these procedures.
- Requirement 3: Remove any debris found during the inspections required by Requirement 2, following the same service bulletins and FAA approved maintenance procedures.
- Requirement 4: Inspect the aileron and elevator control rods for scarring or damage near the linear bearings, following the same service bulletins and FAA approved maintenance procedures.
