What it does
This Airworthiness Directive (AD) requires actions to address an identified hazard in the main landing gear (MLG) radius rod spherical bearing on certain British Aerospace Jetstream aeroplanes. The instrument applies to British Aerospace Aircraft Models HP 137 Jetstream Mk 1, Jetstream Series 200, 3100 and 3200 (Applicability). Mechanically, the AD does three things.
First, it mandates installation of a redesigned radius rod retention washer in accordance with BAE Systems Service Bulletin (SB) 32-JM5413 Original Issue, or a later EASA approved revision (Requirement 1). The directive conditions that later EASA-approved revisions of the SB are acceptable.
Second, for aircraft not modified in accordance with SB 32-JM5413 Original Issue (that is, those that have not had the redesigned washer installed), it requires inspection of the MLG radius rod spherical bearing for evidence of migration from the radius rod cylinder. The inspection is to be carried out in accordance with SB 32-JA030340 Revision 1, or a later EASA approved revision (Requirement 2).
Third, for aircraft already modified per SB 32-JM5413 Original Issue, the AD requires a visual inspection of the radius rod cylinder and the retention washer for evidence of spherical bearing migration towards contact, or contact damage with the retention washer (Requirement 3). If bearing migration or retention washer damage is observed on inspection called for by Requirement 3, the AD requires replacement of the radius rod and/or the retention washer (Requirement 4).
The AD prescribes time windows and repetitive intervals for these actions. Installation of the redesigned washer must occur within 2000 flight hours or one year after the effective date of the AD, whichever occurs later (Compliance 1). For non-modified aircraft, inspections must occur within 50 flight cycles since the last inspection required by the original issue of the AD, and repetitively at intervals not to exceed 50 flight cycles (Compliance 2). For aircraft modified per SB 32-JM5413, inspections must be performed prior to the accumulation of 5,000 flight cycles since installation and then repetitively at intervals not exceeding 5,000 flight cycles (Compliance 3). Where migration or damage is observed, replacement must be completed before further flight (Compliance 4). The amendment (AD/JETSTREAM/96 Amdt 1) becomes effective on 7 July 2005 (effective date block). The AD states the unsafe condition , migration of the MLG radius rod housing from the spherical bearing attachment at the wing root that could lead to detachment and sudden collapse of the MLG leg , and identifies incorrect swaging of the bearing sleeve as the cause, noting that the defect cannot be detected with the radius rod actuator installed on the aircraft (Background).
