What it does
This instrument is an Airworthiness Directive (AD) titled AD/JETSTREAM/104, dated 6/2007, issued under the Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) delegation (signed by David Villiers, Delegate of the Civil Aviation Safety Authority). The AD applies to British Aerospace BAe 3100 (Jetstream) Series aeroplanes , specifically "All Model Jetstream Series 3100 and 3200 aircraft, all serial numbers" , but only when fitted with specific main landing gear radius rod cylinders described by part numbers 1847/A through 1847/L and 1862/A through 1862/L that are "without strike-off 12 or 13" (Applicability).
Mechanically, the AD requires inspections and, where defects are found, replacement. The inspection requirements are twofold. First, it mandates an inspection of the “Main Landing Gear Radius Rod Forged Cylinder Flashline” in accordance with the Accomplishment Instructions of BAE Systems Service Bulletin 32-JA060741 (original issue, or later EASA approved revision). If cracks are found during any inspection, the AD requires that, "before further flight, replace the radius rod assembly with a serviceable unit" (Requirement, item 1). Second, the AD requires operators to "accomplish APPH Service Bulletin 1847-32-12 or 1862-32-12, as applicable, or perform a fluorescent dye penetrant inspection of the cylinder counterbore in accordance with APPH Component Maintenance Manual 32-10-16 Revision 11, or later approved revision" (Requirement, item 2).
The AD sets specific compliance timeframes. Unless the initial inspection is already accomplished, the first inspection must be completed "within 3 months after 10 June 2007" and thereafter at intervals "not to exceed 12 months." It also requires inspection "during each radius rod overhaul" (Compliance). The AD becomes effective on 7 June 2007, and it contains three notes clarifying terminating action and spare-parts restrictions: Note 1 identifies installation of specified parts (those with strike-off 12 or 13, or later part numbers 1847/M and 1862/M) as terminating action for repetitive inspections; Note 2 forbids installation of affected radius rod assemblies held as spares after 7 September 2007 unless inspected in accordance with the AD; Note 3 cross-references EASA AD 2007-0087. The Background states the operational risk: the manufacturer reported "radius rods with cracks starting in the flashline near the microswitch boss," and such cracking "can result in the loss of the normal hydraulic system and may lead to a landing gear collapse."
