What it does
This instrument is an Airworthiness Directive (AD/JBK 117/7 Amdt 1) applying to all Kawasaki BK 117 series helicopters. Its operative, mechanical change is a mandatory re-identification of two components: the hinged support (also called the rocker support) and the bearing bracket. The re-identification must be performed in accordance with Kawasaki Service Bulletin KSB-117-116 dated 9 January 1995, or a later revision of that service bulletin approved by the relevant National Airworthiness Authority (NAA) (see Requirement and Applicability rows in the directive table).
The directive specifies a compliance trigger and timetable. Where the re-identification was not already accomplished under the original issue of the directive (the initial AD issued 25 June 1995), operators must re-identify the affected parts within 30 days of the effective date of this amendment. The amendment’s effective date is 30 August 2007 (see Compliance row and Effective date information in the table).
The stated rationale in the Background section is to differentiate these BK 117 components from identically part-numbered components used on the BO 105 series helicopter, because the BO 105 parts have a different fatigue life. The Background also records that the original AD had required a revised fatigue life and re-identification, but that this amendment removes the retirement-life requirements (these are now mandated by AD/JBK 117/25) while retaining the re-identification requirement (see Background).
Who issued the directive is explicitly recorded: it is signed by James Coyne, Delegate of the Civil Aviation Safety Authority, dated 20 July 2007. The directive therefore imposes a discrete maintenance action (physical re-identification, per the service bulletin) on all BK 117 operators within a short compliance window tied to the amendment’s effective date.
