Plain English Summary

2/10 complexity

What this does: This is a safety order requiring operators of specific BK 117 helicopters to fix an electrical defect in the landing gear.

The problem: The landing gear isn't properly electrically connected ("bonded") to the helicopter's airframe. This means static electricity can build up instead of safely discharging, creating a fire or spark hazard during landing or refueling.

Who is affected: Owners and operators of MBB-BK 117 helicopters with serial numbers 7001 through 7261 inclusive.

What must be done: Follow the manufacturer's repair instructions (MBB Alert Service Bulletin 117-90-104) to improve the electrical bonding.

When: Within 50 hours of flying time after 12 December 1991.
