What it does
This Airworthiness Directive, AD/JBK 117/10 Amdt 3, prescribes mandatory maintenance and inspection actions for Kawasaki BK 117 series helicopters relating to the tail boom vertical fin spar. It (a) requires operators to revise the KHI‑BK117 Maintenance Manual to specified revisions (Requirement 1), and (b) requires performance of inspections detailed in Kawasaki Service Bulletin KSB‑117‑129C in accordance with the inspection interval and method specified in the revised Maintenance Manual (Requirement 2). The Directive makes these actions immediately mandatory for the affected fleet: initially “before further flight after 28 March 2006” and, thereafter, at the intervals specified in the Maintenance Manual (Compliance statement). The Amendment becomes effective on 28 March 2006 (Effective date).
The Directive also prescribes a remediation pathway where inspection results exceed allowable limits: operators must not fly and must contact Kawasaki Heavy Industries (KHI) Customer Service for technical advice prior to further flight (Requirement 2, paragraph 2). The Amendment text records that earlier amendments required a reinforcement modification and increased inspection periodicity, and that this Amendment transfers the inspection requirements to the KHI Maintenance Manual in response to a new Japanese Civil Aviation Bureau (JCAB) AD (Background; Amendment history lines).
The Directive is issued by the Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA), signed by the Delegate, David Villiers, and references JCAB AD TCD‑4605B‑2006 and Kawasaki Service Bulletin No. KSB‑117‑129C (signature and notes). It targets a defined list of BK 117 models (Applicability).
