What it does
This Airworthiness Directive (AD) mandates a sequence of non-destructive inspections and corrective actions for the wing upper splice plate (part number 14157126-3) on BAe Systems (Operations) Jetstream 4100 series aeroplanes. The AD was triggered by a report of corrosion found on an in-service aircraft during a routine four-year structural inspection. Investigation established that the plate’s susceptibility to corrosion correlates with its material conductivity, measured in percent IACS (International Annealed Copper Standard). The directive requires three tiers of action depending on inspection outcomes.
First, all affected aircraft must have an eddy current inspection of the splice plate performed. The eddy current reading determines the next steps. If the reading is at or above 35.0 percent IACS, no further action is required for that aircraft. If the reading falls below 35.0 percent IACS, the operator must carry out a borescope inspection of the splice plate before further flight. This borescope inspection searches for visible corrosion.
When no corrosion is found, a repeat borescope inspection must be performed at intervals not exceeding 12 months. When corrosion is found within acceptable limits specified in Figure 1 of the relevant service bulletin, the same 12-month repeat inspection applies, but in addition the splice plate must be replaced within three years of the corrosion discovery. When corrosion exceeds the acceptable limits, the splice plate must be replaced before further flight, or repaired using an EASA-approved repair. The directive also provides a terminating action: installing a replacement splice plate of part number 14157126-3PF stops the cycle of repeat inspections.
The AD became effective on 20 February 2008. It references British Aerospace Regional Aircraft Service Bulletin J41-57-019 (original or Revision 1), and BAE Systems (Operations) Limited Service Bulletins J41-57-020 and J41-57-021, each at Revision 1 or later EASA-approved revision. The background notes that Revision 1 of SB J41-57-020 extended applicability to include aircraft construction numbers 41102 through 41104, which were not covered in the original issue.
