Plain English Summary

2/10 complexity

What this is: A safety order requiring helicopter operators to fix a dangerous fault in seat belt buckles that could pop open unexpectedly during flight.

Who it affects: Owners and operators of McDonnell Douglas (Hughes) and Kawasaki 369 series helicopters fitted with seat belts made by the Eon Corporation.

What must be done: Follow the manufacturer's specific repair instructions (called Service Instructions or S.I.N., with reference numbers HN-202, DN-141, EN-29, or FN-18 depending on the exact helicopter model) to correct the buckle defect.

When: This repair had to be completed before the helicopter's next maintenance release was issued after 31 August 1986.

Why it matters: Seat belts that open accidentally create a serious injury risk during turbulence, hard landings, or accidents. This directive ensures the locking mechanism works properly.
