Plain English Summary

2/10 complexity

What this does: This is an aviation safety order (called an Airworthiness Directive) that requires owners of specific Hughes helicopters to inspect the landing gear for dangerous cracks.

Who it affects: Operators of Hughes 500C model 369HS Series helicopters (also known as McDonnell Douglas or Kawasaki 369 Series).

What must be done: Operators must follow a specific technical instruction from the manufacturer (Hughes Service Instruction Notice HN-196) to:

Inspect landing gear struts and feet for cracking
Apply new corrosion prevention and sealing methods
Use updated tightening force values (torque settings) for the bolts

When: The work must be done within 300 hours of flight time after 28 February 1985.

Why it matters: Cracks in landing gear can cause the helicopter to collapse during landing, takeoff, or while parked, risking injury to passengers and ground crew.
