Plain English Summary

2/10 complexity

What this law does: This Airworthiness Directive requires owners and operators of specific Schweizer (Hughes) 269C helicopters to inspect and correct a potentially dangerous assembly defect in the belt drive upper pulley.

Who it affects: Anyone operating Model 269C helicopters with serial numbers between 1166 and 1259 (inclusive).

What you must do: Follow the instructions in Schweizer Service Information Notice No. N-209 to check whether the oil retainers in the pulley assembly bearing end caps are installed backwards.

When you must do it: By whichever comes first of:

The next 100-hourly inspection after 31 July 1987, or
Within 3 months of flight time after 30 June 1987

Why this matters: If the oil retainers are installed backwards, the bearings won't receive adequate lubricating oil. This can cause excessive bearing wear and potentially lead to mechanical failure, creating a serious safety risk during flight.

Applicability: All model 269C helicopters S/N 1166 to 1259 inclusive.

Requirement: Action in accordance with Schweizer Service Information Notice No. N-209.

Compliance: At next 100 hourly inspection after 31 July 1987 or within 3 months time in service after 30 June 1987 whichever occurs first.

Background: A possibility exists that the forward and aft pulley assy bearing end caps may have the oil retainers installed backwards. This could lead to excessive bearing wear due to the inadequate supply of lubricating oil.
