What it does
This instrument is an Australian Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) Airworthiness Directive (AD/HU 269/111) addressing a specific lateral control trim actuator assembly installed on certain Schweizer (Hughes) 269-series helicopters. Mechanically it requires: (a) an immediate inspection of the lateral control trim actuator assembly for visual and tactile signs of damage or looseness; (b) removal, modification and test-running of the actuator assembly where defects are found; and (c) modification of the actuator assembly within a short time window even where no immediate defect is visible. The Directive also prescribes a separate modification requirement for a narrow set of 269D Configuration A serial numbers (Requirement 2). The AD identifies the affected part by part number P/N 269A7316-13 and excludes assemblies already modified by a specific drilled hole (a number 30 twist drill through the lateral trim control housing inner spring tube socket). The AD becomes effective on 2 June 2005 (Compliance) and was issued following three reported incidents of the inner spring tube separating from the lateral trim control housing, which produced lateral cyclic control restriction (Background).
The AD binds operators of the listed serial-numbered helicopters by setting specific timeframes for action. For Model 269C and 269C-1 helicopters the inspection must be carried out before further flight after the AD’s effective date (Requirement 1(a); Compliance). If the inspection reveals scuffing, deformation, looseness or bond separation, the implicated actuator assembly must be removed, modified and test-run before further flight (Requirement 1(b); Compliance). If the inspection reveals no such defect, the actuator assembly must nevertheless be modified within the next 25 hours time-in-service (TIS) following the inspection (Requirement 1(c); Compliance). For the Model 269D Configuration A helicopters covered by the AD, the modification must be completed within 50 hours TIS after the effective date (Requirement 2; Compliance). The AD identifies the procedural sources for the inspections and modifications: Schweizer Service Bulletins B-283.1 or C1B-017.1 (Parts I and II) dated 4 March 2005 for 269C/269C-1, and Schweizer Service Bulletin DB-012 dated 8 February 2005 for 269D Configuration A (Requirement).
