What it does
This Airworthiness Directive (AD), titled AD/HU 269/103 Lower Coupling Drive Shaft 1/94, prescribes an inspection and reinspection regime for the lower coupling drive shaft on certain Schweizer (Hughes) 269 series helicopters. It applies to specified models , 269A, TH55A, 269A-1, 269B and 269C , and requires operators to carry out an action already issued by the manufacturer, Schweizer, specifically in accordance with Schweizer Service Bulletin B-257-1, and to inspect for cracking in accordance with Part I of a requirement document referenced by the AD. The AD sets an initial compliance deadline and a repeating inspection interval: an initial inspection "Within 100 hours time in service from 15 January 1994 or by 15 April 1994, whichever occurs first," and subsequent reinspections "at intervals not exceeding 300 hours time in service" (AD/HU 269/103, Compliance). The AD includes a limited exception: Model 269C helicopters with serial number 1628 and subsequent were delivered from the factory with Part I of the requirement document already incorporated, and the Requirement clause is prefaced with "Unless previously carried out action in accordance with Schweizer SB B-257-1." The stated operational background for the AD is that damage has occurred to the lower coupling drive shaft as a result of engine overspeed during start up (AD/HU 269/103, Background). The document also records that FAA AD 93-17-13 Amdt 39-8684 is referenced (AD/HU 269/103, Note). Mechanically, the AD makes compliance with the manufacturer’s identified remedial and inspection instructions mandatory for the listed Australian-registered types by setting specified timing: an initial mandatory check within the earlier of a 100-hour flight-hours window or a hard calendar cut-off, then continuing inspections every 300 flight hours. The AD thus converts a manufacturer-maintained corrective procedure and inspection practice into a required regulatory activity for the affected fleet where the AD applies.
