What it does
This Airworthiness Directive (AD/HS 125/183), effective 4 June 2009, requires operators of certain Hawker Beechcraft BAe 125 series aeroplanes to inspect and, if necessary, rework wiring associated with the cockpit ventilation and avionics cooling system blower motor. The Directive applies only to Hawker Beechcraft Corporation Model BH.125 series 600A aeroplanes and Model HS.125 series 700A aeroplanes that are identified in Hawker Beechcraft Mandatory Service Bulletin SB 24-3850, dated January 2008, and that have been modified in accordance with United States FAA Supplemental Type Certificate SA2271SW, see the Applicability table. The Directive’s stated safety rationale is to prevent smoke and fumes in the cockpit if a blower motor seizes and overheats from excessive current draw; the Background section records an FAA report of a seized blower motor that emitted smoke.
Mechanically, the AD imposes a three-step compliance sequence in the Requirement paragraph. First, operators must inspect the wiring diagrams concerning the cockpit blowers and compare those diagrams with the aeroplane’s actual configuration "in accordance with the Accomplishment Instructions of SB 24-3850." Second, if the current configuration does not match the applicable wiring diagrams, operators must rework the wiring using a method approved by the Manager, Special Certification Office, ASW-190, Rotorcraft Directorate, FAA, and the Manager’s approval must "specifically refer to FAA AD 2009-08-04" for that approval to satisfy the Directive. Third, if the configuration does match the wiring diagrams, operators must rework the wiring in accordance with SB 24-3850 Accomplishment Instructions. The Compliance paragraph sets the timing: the inspection must occur within 600 hours time in service or six months after the Directive’s effective date, whichever is earlier, and any required rework must be completed before further flight after that inspection. The Directive also accepts later revisions of SB 24-3850 that the FAA approves as an Alternate Method of Compliance to FAA AD 2009-08-04 as acceptable for compliance with the equivalent requirements of this Directive.
