What it does
This Airworthiness Directive (AD), AD/HS 125/161 Amdt 1 (19/2013), requires specific maintenance actions to address cadmium flaking in oxygen system plumbing fittings on specified British Aerospace BAe 125 series aeroplanes and related Hawker models. Mechanically, the Directive mandates (a) the replacement of cadmium‑plated cone caps or fittings in the oxygen plumbing with improved parts, (b) a detailed visual inspection of the removed items and associated tee‑pieces, sleeves or pipe connections for flaking or corrosion, (c) cleaning and an oxygen system flow check where flaking or corrosion is detected, and (d) repair of any discrepancies found during the flow check in accordance with the applicable Raytheon Aircraft Service Bulletin (SB), or by an alternative method approved by the Manager, Technical Specialists Section, Certification Standards Branch, Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) where the SB specifies contacting the manufacturer (see Requirement 1.a-c and analogous provisions for Requirements 2-4, and the paragraph addressing contact with CASA where the SB requires manufacturer repair disposition).
The AD identifies the applicable models by reference to specific Raytheon SB numbers and SB dates (for example SB 35‑3169, SB 35‑3171, SB 35‑3034, SB 35‑3170, SB 35‑3167 and SB 35‑3168, all dated September 1998) and lists the particular series and model groups covered (see Applicability table). The Directive sets compliance timing: replacement tasks (the paragraph labelled a. in each Requirement) must be done within six months of the Directive’s effective date; any cleaning, flow checks and repairs required after inspection are required before further flight (see Compliance timings).
The Directive’s stated safety rationale, explicitly attributed to the FAA and Raytheon reports, is that a reaction process was found to cause cadmium flaking which can block oxygen system valves and thereby impair oxygen delivery to crew and passengers in emergencies. The Amendment 1 to AD/HS 125/161 corrects a typographical error in the FAA AD reference (correcting the reference to FAA AD 2000‑02‑35) and does not alter the substantive maintenance obligations. The Amendment’s effective date is 10 September 2013; the original AD first became effective on 23 March 2000 (see Background; Compliance; effective date).
