Plain English Summary

2/10 complexity

What this does: This is a mandatory safety order (called an Airworthiness Directive) for owners and operators of specific Hiller UH-12 helicopters that have been modified with turbine engines.

Who it affects: Anyone who owns or operates Hiller UH-12D, UH-12E, or UH-12E-4 helicopters that were converted using specific Supplemental Type Certificates (STC numbers SH177WE and SH178WE).

What must be done: The helicopter's engine mount clevises (metal fittings that connect the engine to the helicopter frame) must be inspected and/or replaced according to instructions in Soloy Conversions Service Bulletin 19-560. This must happen within 10 hours of flight time after 26 September 1985, and then repeated as specified in that bulletin.

Why it matters: The manufacturer reported that these engine mount clevises were failing. If they break, the engine could detach from the helicopter during flight, which would be catastrophic.
