Plain English Summary

2/10 complexity

What this is: An airworthiness directive (a mandatory safety order) requiring a specific mechanical modification to certain aircraft propeller governors.

Who it affects: Aircraft maintenance engineers and operators installing Woodward propeller governors (part number 8210-020).

What it requires: Before installing one of these governors in an aircraft after 30 June 1976, you must modify the flyweight pin retainer — a component that helps regulate engine speed and propeller pitch — following the instructions in Allison Commercial Engine Bulletin CEB-1051.

Why it matters: This prevents the flyweight pin from coming loose, which could cause the governor to fail and lead to uncontrolled engine overspeed or loss of propeller pitch control.
