Plain English Summary

1/10 complexity

What it does: Orders owners of piston-engine aircraft to remove or cover up any exterior markings containing the word "turbo" (including "turbo-charged," "turbo-supercharged," or similar).

Who it affects: Anyone operating a piston-engine aircraft (planes powered by conventional piston engines, not jet turbines).

Why it exists: To prevent deadly fueling errors. Ground crew might see "turbo" on a plane and mistakenly pump jet fuel (turbine fuel) into an aircraft that requires avgas (aviation gasoline). Piston engines fail catastrophically if filled with jet fuel. Removing the "turbo" label makes it clear the plane is a piston-engine type that needs avgas.

What must be done: Scrub off, paint over, or otherwise obliterate any "turbo" branding from the aircraft's exterior—including logos, decals, or lettering.

Compliance: Aircraft owners were required to complete this modification before 1 July 1987.

AD/GENERAL/62

Amdt 1

Turbo Insignia 5/87

Applicability: All piston engine powered aircraft.

Requirement: Remove or otherwise obliterate the word “turbo” from all exterior logos, decals, lettering or markings containing such words as “turbo”, “turbo-charged”, “turbo- supercharged”, “turbo-system”, “turbo-powered”, or similar.

Compliance: Prior to 1 July 1987.

Background: Removing reference to “turbo” should minimise any confusion in the type of fuel required for fuelling piston engined aircraft, and also reduce the possibility of turbine fuel being uplifted into aircraft requiring Avgas only. Airworthiness Advisory Circular article 163-4 refers. This amendment is raised to hasten compliance to aircraft of low utilisation.
