Plain English Summary

2/10 complexity

What this is: An Airworthiness Directive (AD) — a mandatory safety rule issued by the Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) that aircraft owners must follow to keep their planes legally airworthy.

What it requires: Any magnetic compass fitted to an aircraft must be properly calibrated before the aircraft is issued with an Australian Certificate of Airworthiness (the official document proving a plane is safe to fly).

Who it affects: All aircraft that were intended for certification after 31 July 1978 — essentially most modern aircraft operating in Australia.

Why it matters: A faulty compass can send a pilot off course. This rule ensures navigation instruments are accurate before an aircraft ever takes to the skies, referencing technical standards set out in Air Navigation Orders (ANO) 20.18 and 108.6.
