Plain English Summary

2/10 complexity

This safety directive requires immediate inspection of lights inside aircraft cargo and baggage compartments to prevent fire hazards.

Who this affects: All aircraft owners and operators with lighting in cargo or baggage areas.

What you must do:

Inspect all cargo hold lights to ensure they have protective guards (such as metal screens) that prevent luggage from touching the bulbs
Verify that cargo or baggage stored next to the lights will not overheat if the lights are left on continuously
Modify non-compliant installations immediately — if the lights aren't properly protected or run too hot, you must fix them right away (typically by adding protective screens or using lower-heat bulbs)

Why this matters: Unprotected light bulbs in cargo holds can get hot enough to ignite luggage or become damaged by shifting cargo, creating a serious fire risk during flight.

Compliance is required immediately ("forthwith").

Amdt 1

Cargo and Baggage Compartment NK Lighting - Inspection

Applicability: All aircraft having lighting within cargo and baggage compartments.

Requirement: 1. Inspect cargo and baggage compartment lighting installations to ensure that lamps are protected against the possibility of mechanical damage and are such that cargo or baggage placed adjacent to lamps will not be subjected to excessive temperatures when lamps are operating continuously.

Installations which do not comply shall be suitably modified.

Note: Most installations require a protective metal screen to maintain a separation between baggage and cargo. The lamp should be of a minimum size consistent with lighting requirements.

Compliance: Forthwith.
