Plain English Summary

1/10 complexity

What this does: This rule requires aircraft with autopilot systems to display a warning sign (placard) in the cockpit telling pilots what speeds they can safely use the autopilot at.

Who it affects: All aircraft fitted with automatic pilots.

The requirement: If the aircraft's Flight Manual doesn't already specify autopilot speed limits, the pilot must be able to see a placard in the cockpit showing the minimum and maximum airspeeds for autopilot use. The only exception is if the autopilot is approved for use at all speeds up to the aircraft's maximum safe speed (called Vne or "never exceed speed").

Why this amendment exists: This update simply removes references to old documents that have been cancelled. It doesn't change the actual safety requirement, which has been in place since before 1971.
