What it does
Airworthiness Directive AD/GC-1/6 imposes a mandatory inspection and, where corrosion is found, a replacement regime for the engine mount members of Swift Museum Foundation GC-1B model aeroplanes fitted with standard engine mount part number 11-710-2520. The directive requires the owner or operator to probe the tubular members with an ice pick or equivalent tool to detect rust or “pin holing”. If the member appears solid after probing, the operator must either remove the existing upper drive screw (if present) or drill a No. 37 size hole at the upper end, then drill another No. 37 hole at the lower end, and inspect for rust, water, or deterioration. Any member found to be damaged by internal corrosion must be replaced by welding in a new member made of 7/8 x 0.035 inch 4130 steel heat treated to 85,000 p.s.i. yield. After replacement, the new member (and any existing member that passes inspection) must be filled with Lionoil or an equivalent slushing compound, then drained, and the No. 37 holes plugged with drive screws (AN 535-4-3). The compliance timeline is: an initial check within six months after the commencement date of 17 September 2020, and thereafter at each 100 hours time in service or every 12 months, whichever occurs first. The directive notes that no exact field method exists to measure remaining wall thickness; the inspector is expected to use a close visual inspection of the drilled hole and the condition encountered, such as the presence of a heavy colloidal rust solution, to make a reasonable judgment of the general condition. The source document for the AD is United States of America Federal Aviation Administration AD 64‑05‑06, which mandated similar requirements for the same aircraft type. CASA issued this AD because an audit of the Australian Aircraft Register revealed that Swift Museum Foundation GC-1B aircraft had been registered for some time without equivalent requirements previously being mandated in Australia. The background states there have been instances of failure through internal corrosion of the upper left and right hand members of the engine mount assembly, with the point of failure just above the weld junction with the horizontal members. The stated purpose is to preclude the possibility of failures on Australian registered aircraft that could result in the loss of the engine. The directive applies only to the GC-1B model with the specific engine mount part number; it does not extend to the GC-1A or other variants.
