What it does
This Airworthiness Directive (AD/GC-1/4; 18/2020) mandates inspection, adjustment, repair and a parts installation on all Swift Museum Foundation GC‑1A and GC‑1B model aircraft registered in Australia and places ongoing recurring inspection requirements on the landing gear systems. The AD requires three discrete actions:
-
Inspect all bushings in all landing gear pivot points for wear that would allow fore‑and‑aft travel of the main landing gear. The cumulative slack‑caused fore‑and‑aft travel of the wheels, measured at the centre of the axle, must not exceed 3/8 of an inch. The measurement must be taken with the hydraulic pressure relieved and with the landing gear in two prescribed positions: (i) unlocked and in an intermediate position near to, but not in, the full‑down position; and (ii) with the landing gear just entering the wheel well. If the travel exceeds 3/8 of an inch in either position, the landing gear assembly must be repaired so travel is reduced to less than 3/8 of an inch (Requirement 1(a)).
-
Install a spacer emergency landing gear pull‑down system in accordance with TEMCO Service Bulletin No. 28 (Requirement 1(b)). The AD instructs compliance with TEMCO Service Bulletin No. 28 “as in force from time to time”, which requires operators to apply the most recent version of that service bulletin.
-
Inspect the emergency extension system for proper adjustment in accordance with paragraphs 8, 9 and 12 of TEMCO Service Bulletin No. 28 (Requirement 1(c)).
The AD sets specific compliance timings. For Requirements 1(a) and 1(c) the initial compliance is “unless previously accomplished, within 6 months after the commencement date of this AD and thereafter at every 100 hours’ time in service or every 12 months, whichever occurs first.” For Requirement 1(b) the initial compliance is “unless previously accomplished, at 100 hours’ time in service or 12 months, whichever occurs first.” The AD commences on 17 September 2020 and was issued after an audit of the Australian Aircraft Register revealed that equivalent FAA AD requirements had not previously been mandated for these aircraft. The AD expressly states that FAA AD 51‑11‑04 is the source document for the requirements (Notes 1 and 2 and Background).
