What it does
This Airworthiness Directive (AD) AD/GBK 117/6 Amdt 6, issued by the Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) under delegation, imposes a mandatory continuing airworthiness requirement on operators of Eurocopter BK117 series helicopters. Its mechanical effect is to require repetitive inspections of certain main rotor (MR) blades for bulging on the upper and lower surfaces in the area of the outboard lead balance weight. The inspection must be performed in accordance with Eurocopter Deutschland GmbH Alert Service Bulletin ASB-MBB-BK117-10-108 at Revision 4 (or later revision as accepted by CASA). The directive applies to Models MBB-BK117A-1, A-3, A-4, B-1, B-2, and C-1, all serial numbers, if equipped with MR blades identified by part numbers listed in the ASB.
The AD introduces two compliance regimes depending on the blade’s accumulated flight hours since new. For blades with less than 1,800 flight hours (FH) time since new, the initial inspection must be accomplished within 300 FH after the effective date of 19 November 2009, but not later than upon reaching 1,800 FH total, whichever occurs first. Repetitive inspections thereafter must occur at intervals not exceeding 300 FH. For blades with more than 1,800 FH time since new, the initial inspection must be performed within 300 FH after the effective date, or within 300 FH since the last required inspection under the previous version of the AD, whichever occurs first. Repetitive inspections continue every 300 FH.
If any inspection detects damage outside the allowable limits specified in the ASB Revision 4, the operator must replace each affected blade with a serviceable blade before further flight. Critically, replacement of individual MR blades does not terminate the repetitive inspection requirement. The AD ceases to apply to a helicopter only when all MR blades installed on that helicopter have part numbers not listed in the ASB - that is, blades without lead balance weights. This amendment (Amdt 6) extends the repetitive inspection interval from 50 FH (set by earlier amendments) to 300 FH, and deletes the previous prohibition on reinstalling MR blades with lead balance weights (i.e., blades with part numbers listed in the ASB). The AD also notes that compliance with earlier revisions (original, Rev 1, Rev 2, or Rev 3) before the effective date is acceptable for initial requirements only; after the effective date, all actions must follow Revision 4. The directive incorporates EASA AD 2009-0199 by reference.
