What it does
This airworthiness directive, recorded as AD/GA8/8 Amdt 1 (7/2015), requires modification of GippsAero GA8-TC 320 aircraft by installing an approved steel engine mount fire seal washer at each engine mount location. The directive identifies the affected fleet as “All GA8-TC 320 aircraft up to and including serial number GA8-TC 320-14-205” (Applicability). It sets the mandated corrective action as compliance with “GippsAero Service Bulletin SB-GA8-2014-115 Issue 1, or later approved revision” (Requirement). The compliance window is expressed as “within 300 hours flight time or 12 months, whichever occurs first, from 1 December 2014, (the original effective date of this AD)” unless the modification has “previously [been] accomplished” (Compliance). The amendment itself becomes effective on 1 April 2015 (Compliance). The instrument is signed by Mike Higgins as Delegate of the Civil Aviation Safety Authority, dated 26 March 2015.
The accompanying Background text explains the safety rationale: a review found omission of engine mount fire seal washers in assembly, producing an engine mount configuration that “does not meet the certification basis for the aircraft, specifically regulation 23.865 of the Federal Aviation Regulations of the United States of America,” and that the washers are required so the engine mounts “are capable of withstanding the effects of a fire” and to address “a potential risk of reduced engine retention capability in the event of a fire” (Background). The AD amends its applicability to be inclusive of the affected aircraft serial number range (Background).
Mechanically, the AD converts a service bulletin recommendation into a mandatory requirement for the named aircraft cohort, prescribes a precise compliance trigger (hours or months from the original effective date), and allows the use of later approved revisions of the service bulletin. The AD does not set out penalties, financing arrangements, or a certification procedure for carried-out work; it records the required action and the time limit and identifies the certification requirement (FAR 23.865) that the modification is intended to satisfy.
