What it does
This airworthiness directive (AD) requires inspection and modification of the solenoid (relay) box electrical bonding on specified Gippsland Aeronautics GA8 and GA8-TC 320 aeroplanes. The AD applies to GA8 aircraft with serial numbers up to and including GA8-20-262 and GA8-TC 320 aircraft with serial numbers up to and including GA8-TC 320-20-261, per the Applicability line. The operative mandate is to "accomplish the requirements of Gippsland Aeronautics mandatory service bulletin SB-GA8-2023-216 Issue 1, dated 24 February 2023, as in force at the date of this AD" (Requirement). Compliance must be completed, unless already done, "within 100 hours flight time or 12 months, whichever occurs first, from the effective date of this AD" (Compliance). The AD becomes effective on 23 December 2023 (Effective date). The Background explains the safety trigger: operators reported intermittent system discrepancies attributed to poor electrical bonding of the solenoid box assembly; such poor bonding may cause degraded performance, errors, or intermittent failures of equipment connected to Bus 1, Bus 2, associated electrical control and protective devices fitted within or attached to the solenoid box (Background).
Mechanically, the AD converts the mandatory service bulletin into a regulatory obligation for the listed serial-numbered aircraft and establishes a fixed compliance window measured by flight hours or calendar time from the AD’s effective date. It distinguishes aircraft by production practice: most aircraft manufactured before July 2019 relied on the solenoid box attachment screws for bonding, while aircraft produced after July 2019 "should be fitted with a dedicated electrical bonding connection" (Background). The AD is issued by a delegate of the Civil Aviation Safety Authority (signature block), indicating CASA’s regulatory instrument as the source of the directive.
