What it does
This Airworthiness Directive (AD/G1159/48, 8/2007) requires a targeted repair of the aileron force link assembly wiring harness on specified Gulfstream models/series to address potential damage to the harness outer shield and conductor insulation. Mechanically, the Directive imposes two concrete obligations.
First, Requirement 1 mandates that, if the work has not already been completed, operators must "repair the force link assembly wire harness by doing all actions specified in the Accomplishment Instructions of the applicable service information identified in Table 1 of this Directive" (Requirement 1; Table 1). Table 1 identifies specific manufacturer customer bulletins as the required service information: Gulfstream G500 Customer Bulletin 14 dated 13 June 2005, Gulfstream G550 Customer Bulletin 14 dated 23 June 2005, and Gulfstream GV Customer Bulletin 135 dated 23 June 2005. Note 1 adds Vought Service Bulletin SB-VAIGV/GVSP-27-PG0098 dated 9 May 2005 as an additional source of service information for the repair.
Second, Requirement 2 addresses the contingency where environmental seal damage is discovered while performing the Requirement 1 repair. In that event, operators must "repair using a method approved by the Manager, Atlanta Aircraft Certification Office (ACO), United States Federal Aviation Administration (FAA)" and the Manager's approval letter must specifically refer to FAA AD 2006-18-13 (Requirement 2). The Directive sets separate compliance timing for the two obligations: Requirement 1 must be completed before 31 October 2007; Requirement 2 must be completed before further flight after damage to the environmental seal is detected (Compliance section). The AD became effective on 2 August 2007 (Effective date).
The Directive is limited in territorial and equipment scope by explicit applicability language. It applies only to Gulfstream Aerospace Corporation model/series aeroplanes listed in the applicability table and the serial number ranges given (GV serial numbers 674 through 693 inclusive; GV‑SP serial numbers 5001 through 5072 inclusive). The background statement supplied attributes the root concern to an FAA report that the wiring harness outer shield and insulation on primary conductors "may have been inadvertently cut due to an improper method used to remove the wiring outer jacket," and says the Directive is issued "to prevent the loss of the hardover prevention system (HOPS) in the roll axis due to a short circuit in the wiring harness" which could reduce controllability (Background). The AD is issued by the Civil Aviation Safety Authority (signed by David Punshon as a CASA delegate, 21 June 2007).
