What it does
This Airworthiness Directive (AD/G1159/45, 5/2006 DM) requires operators of specified Gulfstream aeroplanes to revise the Limitations section of their Aircraft Flight Manuals (AFMs) to include specified procedures to follow if cockpit flight panel displays go blank or malfunction (Requirement; Table 1). The AD applies to Gulfstream Model GIV‑X series aeroplanes, serial numbers 4001 and subsequent, and Gulfstream Model GV‑SP series aeroplanes, serial numbers 5001 and subsequent, on which Gulfstream Modification ASC‑904 or a production equivalent has been incorporated (Applicability). The Directive lists the exact AFM documents and revision numbers to be incorporated for G350, G450, G500 and G550 aircraft (Table 1). Compliance is mandatory within 10 days after the effective date, and the Directive became effective on 22 March 2006 (Compliance; Effective date). The AD is signed by a delegate of the Civil Aviation Safety Authority (James Coyne) and includes a cross‑reference to the relevant FAA Airworthiness Directive (FAA AD 2006‑04‑13 Amdt 39‑14495) as a related document (Note).
The stated corrective mechanism is procedural: amend the AFM’s Limitations section to include new procedures to be followed in the event of full or partial cockpit flight panel display loss or malfunction (Requirement; Background). The AD is explicit that the AFM amendment is an interim measure and that further rulemaking to correct the underlying discrepancy is anticipated (Background). The Directive therefore imposes an immediate operational/administrative obligation on operators, while signalling that technical or design‑level remediation is expected later.
Mechanically, the AD does not mandate replacement of hardware, software patching, modification of the advanced graphic modules, or any specific maintenance action in this text. It requires the AFM content specified by the Directive be incorporated into the aircraft’s limitations and that any subsequent AFM revisions continue to contain identical procedures as prescribed by this AD (Requirement). The directive sets a tight compliance window of 10 days from effective date, making the AFM revision and any associated crew briefing or training an urgent operational task for affected operators (Compliance).
