Plain English Summary

2/10 complexity

What this is: An Airworthiness Directive (AD) — a mandatory safety order issued by the Civil Aviation Safety Authority requiring specific repairs or modifications to aircraft.

What it requires: Owners or operators must modify the air by-pass valve on specific Franklin piston engines (model 6VS-335-A) when installed in Bell or Hiller helicopters. The modification must follow the instructions in Carson Helicopters Service Bulletin No. 107 and Franklin Service Bulletin No. 106.

Who it affects: Anyone installing these specific Franklin engines (models 6VS-335-A) in Bell or Hiller helicopters under the specified FAA Supplemental Type Certificates (STC SH1-512 and SH1-457).

When: This modification had to be completed before installing the engine in an aircraft after 15 June 1967.

Why it matters: Airworthiness Directives are legally binding safety requirements. Non-compliance means the aircraft is not airworthy and cannot legally fly.
