Plain English Summary

3/10 complexity

This Directive requires owners/operators of specified Extra EA‑300 aircraft (certain EA‑300/S and EA‑300/L serials fitted with electrically actuated rudder pedal adjustment mechanisms manufactured up to November 1995) to inspect and rectify the rudder pedal secondary safety stop in accordance with Extra Flugzeugbau SB‑300‑3‑95. The check must be done before the next flight, at the next maintenance‑release or 50‑flight‑hour inspection (whichever comes first), and whenever a new rudder cable is installed. Owners/operators pay for inspections/repairs and must document compliance. The measure targets cable misalignment/elongation that can allow pedal overtravel and risk rudder‑system failure.

AD/EXTRA/6 Rudder Pedal Safety Control Stop 4/96 DM

Applicability: EA-300: All serial numbers fitted with an electrically actuated rudder pedal adjustment mechanism manufactured up until November 1995,

EA-300/S serial numbers 001 to 028, and EA-300/L serial numbers 001 to 015.

Requirement: Action in accordance with Extra Flugzeugbau GmbH SB-300-3-95.

Note: LBA AD 95-443 refers.

Compliance: Prior to further flight after the effective date of this Directive; and then at the next inspection for Maintenance Release issue, or the 50 flight hour inspection, whichever occurs first; thereafter at each installation of a new rudder cable.

The effective date of this Directive is 31 January 1996.

Background: A secondary (safety) stop is fitted to protect the lower fitting of the brake system in case of rudder cable failure, and this should not be reached during normal operation. Misalignment or elongation of the rudder cables may result in pedal overtravel with damage to the stop, overload of the rudder bearing, and a subsequent inflight failure of the rudder pedal system.
