What it does
This instrument is Amendment 4 of Airworthiness Directive AD/ERJ-170/4, issued by a delegate of the Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) under the Civil Aviation Regulations. It imposes two mandatory actions on operators of Embraer ERJ-170 series aeroplanes equipped with Primus EPIC software loads version 17.3, 17.4, 17.5, 17.6 or 17.7. First, it requires a repetitive functional test of the Flight Guidance Control System (FGCS) to verify engagement of its channels. The test must be performed within 300 hours time in service (TIS) after the first issue of the Australian Certificate of Airworthiness for the aeroplane, and thereafter at intervals not exceeding 600 hours TIS until the second requirement is satisfied. Functional tests accomplished under earlier amendments of this directive are accepted as compliant for this requirement. Second, it requires the installation of either Primus EPIC software load version 19.3 in accordance with Embraer Service Bulletin (SB) 170-31-0019 (original issue dated 3 May 2007 or later ANAC-approved revisions) or a higher software load version installed in accordance with an Embraer SB approved by the Brazilian Agência Nacional de Avição Civil (ANAC). The software installation is the terminating action that ends the obligation for repetitive functional tests. The compliance date for the software installation is no later than 30 June 2009. The amendment becomes effective on 18 June 2008, superseding Amendment 3 which had taken effect on 5 June 2008. The key mechanical change from Amendment 3 is the extension of the terminating action date by 12 months: the original deadline had presumably been 30 June 2008 and Amendment 4 pushes it to 30 June 2009. The directive explicitly cross-references ANAC AD 2006-11-02R3, indicating that the Australian AD mirrors the Brazilian regulatory action with some adaptation to Australian certification requirements. The directive does not create any new requirements beyond the continuing repetitive test and the software upgrade; it merely adjusts the timeline for the upgrade.
