What it does
This Airworthiness Directive (AD/ERJ-170/22) mandates the replacement of the Embraer ERJ-170 series aeroplanes engines' full authority digital engine control (FADEC) software currently installed on the affected models, with FADEC software version V5.41, or any later FADEC software version approved by the Brazilian Agência Nacional de Aviação Civil (ANAC). The directive identifies the detailed instructions and procedures to accomplish the software change as those contained in Embraer Service Bulletin 170-73-0006, either the original issue or any further revisions that have been approved by ANAC. The AD sets a compliance deadline expressed in flight hours: the upgrade must be completed within the next 1,200 hours time in service counted from the directive's effective date. The AD became effective on 7 May 2009 and is signed by a delegate of the Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA), dated 26 March 2009. The AD expressly supersedes AD/ERJ-170/16 Amdt 1, which is to be cancelled.
Mechanically, the instrument (a) identifies the fleet affected by model designation, (b) prescribes a mandatory software version (V5.41) or later ANAC‑approved versions, (c) fixes the source of the installation instructions to a named Embraer service bulletin (and any ANAC‑approved revisions to it), and (d) sets a time-in-service compliance window of 1,200 hours from the effective date. The directive also notes ANAC AD 2008-03-01R2 as a related reference. The text contains a short technical background explaining the sequence of prior AD action: an earlier AD had required V5.40 in response to loss of thrust control caused by fuel metering valve feedback signal problems, but V5.40 later produced instances of commanded in-flight shutdown (IFSD), so an amendment required a return to V5.30; V5.41 is now issued to correct the anomalies identified with V5.40 and is made the new mandated software.
