What it does
This instrument is an Airworthiness Directive (AD) issued by the Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) that mandates specific modifications to certain Embraer ERJ-170 series aeroplanes. The Directive is identified as AD/ERJ-170/18 Amdt 1, titled "Electrical Wiring and ARINC 429 Data Bus", and the amendment became effective on 15 January 2009. The Directive lists applicability by model and serial numbers, prescribes three discrete modification tasks taken from Embraer Service Bulletins (SBs), and fixes the compliance interval for those tasks at "within the next 6000 hours time in service after the effective date of the original issue of this Directive."
Mechanically, the Directive requires:
- Requirement 1: modification of the electrical wiring on the overhead panel in the cockpit in accordance with Embraer SB 170-24-0019 original issue (dated 6 December 2006 as corrected by the Amendment);
- Requirement 2: change of the Air Data Smart Probe 3 channel B power supply bus from ESS2 to ESS3 in accordance with Embraer SB 170-24-0020 original issue (dated 30 November 2006 as corrected by the Amendment); and
- Requirement 3: duplication of the ARINC 429 airspeed signal for an extension longer than the rotor burst impact area; change of primary power source for MAU 2 from DC BUS 2 to DC ESS BUS 2; and rewiring of Slat/Flap Actuators Control Electronics (SF-ACE) 1 and 2 to Primary Actuator Control Electronics (P-ACE) 1, 2 and 3 in accordance with Embraer SB 170-31-0020 original issue (dated 20 July 2007 as corrected by the Amendment).
The Directive expressly permits compliance using later revisions of the referenced SBs so long as those revisions are "approved by the Brazilian Agência Nacional de Aviação Civil (ANAC)." The Directive also cross-references ANAC AD 2008-09-01. The background statement explains the safety driver: ANAC re-assessed rotor burst analysis and advised that a potential loss of electrical power supply to specified systems could result in loss of pitch and yaw control; the mandated modifications are those corrective actions.
