What it does
This instrument is an Airworthiness Directive (AD) titled AD/EMB-145/4, dated 8/2008 DM and issued by the Civil Aviation Safety Authority (delegate signature dated 16 June 2008). It imposes mandatory inspection and continuing inspection requirements for the thrust reverser stow/transit switches installed on both engines of Embraer EMB-145 series aeroplanes, and it sets a clear path to a “terminal action” that ends the repetitive inspection obligation.
Mechanically, the AD requires two actions. First, it mandates an initial inspection for internal corrosion of both engine thrust reverser stow/transit switches, performed in accordance with detailed instructions in Embraer Service Bulletin (SB) 145-78-0029 (original issue) or SB 145LEG-78-005 (original issue), or later revisions approved by the Brazilian Departamento de Aviação Civil (DAC) - Centro Técnico Aeroespacial (CTA) or Agência Nacional de Aviação Civil (ANAC) (Requirement 1). Second, it mandates continued repetitive inspections at specified intervals until a specific replacement part is installed (Requirement 2). The AD identifies installation of transit switches part number (P/N) 83-990-168 on both engines, according to Embraer SB 145-78-0035 (original issue) or SB 145LEG-78-0006 (original issue), or later revisions approved by the CTA or ANAC, as the terminal action eliminating the repetitive inspection requirement. The AD also states that switches P/N 83-990-168, when installed at the stow positions, do not require the repetitive inspections (Requirement text).
The AD specifies compliance timing tied to aircraft total time in service (TIS) as recorded on 8 June 2001 (the effective date of the original DAC AD2001-05-03). For aircraft with more than 1,600 hours TIS on that date, the initial inspection must be carried out within the next 400 hours TIS after that date. For aircraft with 1,600 hours or below on that date, the initial inspection must be carried out before the aircraft reaches 2,000 hours total TIS after that date (Compliance). Thereafter, inspections must be repeated within every 1,200 hours TIS until the P/N 83-990-168 switches are fitted (Compliance).
