What it does
This airworthiness directive (AD/EMB-120/29 Amdt 4), dated 10/2007 and effective 27 September 2007, requires operators of all Embraer EMB-120 (Brasilia) series aeroplanes to take the corrective and procedural actions set out in the related Brazilian authority directive ANAC AD2001-06-01 R4 Amdt 39-1193. The instrument states the operative requirement simply as: "Action in accordance with the instructions contained in Brazil ANAC AD2001-06-01 R4 Amdt 39-1193" (Requirement). In operational terms the AD does two concrete things in the text provided: first, it mandates incorporation of the flight manual amendment into the Aircraft Flight Manual (AFM) at Revision 67, dated 5 June 2001; second, it cross-refers to specific Embraer service bulletins (120-25-0262, 120-27-0095, 120-27-0096) and to later ANAC-approved revisions of those documents (Note). The AD also preserves a transitional administrative detail: a copy of the ANAC AD that ANAC required to be inserted into the AFM may be removed once the AFM has been amended to include Revision 67 (Requirement).
The background paragraph identifies the operational hazard driving the directive: pitch trim upsets due to a spring-back effect in the elevator trim system control cables following sudden autopilot disengagement during descent. The causal chain described in the AD is: jammed or frozen trim actuators, autopilot trim servo action stretching control cables up to the servo torque limit, and a consequent release producing a pitch trim upset (Background). The amendment notes record incremental changes: placard requirements on the cockpit glareshield, changes to placard text, the administrative allowance to remove the inserted AD from the AFM after the AFM is amended, and finally Amendment 4 was issued in response to revision of the related ANAC AD that requires modification of the elevator trim system (Background).
