What it does
This Airworthiness Directive, AD/EMB-110/53 Amdt 2 (13/2006), mandates inspection, protective treatment and possible replacement of the nose landing gear rotating cylinder assembly on all Embraer EMB-110 (Bandeirante) series aeroplanes. The Directive requires external dye-penetrant inspection and internal boroscope inspection in accordance with Embraer Service Bulletin No. 110-32-0088 Revision 03 (referred to throughout as the SB). Where corrosion or cracking is found, the AD requires bench inspection actions, the application of protective treatment, or replacement of the rotating cylinder assembly before further flight, depending on the outcome of inspections (Requirement 1 and Requirement 2). Compliance times are expressed in flight hours and calendar days measured from 28 July 2004 and specify initial and repeat inspection intervals (Compliance 1 and Compliance 2). Amendment 1 previously introduced the boroscope internal inspection; Amendment 2 (this instrument) clarifies prior requirements and corrects an error in Amendment 1. The AD became effective 21 December 2006 and was signed by the CASA delegate on 9 November 2006.
The Directive is expressed as mandatory actions to be taken by operators or maintenance organisations responsible for EMB-110 aircraft that fall within the stated applicability, that is, all Model EMB-110 aircraft (Applicability). The AD cross-references the Brazil CTA AD 2004-04-01 R1 and the Embraer SB for detailed inspection and protection procedures (Note and Requirements). The compliance matrix sets short-term actions (within 150 flight hours or 120 calendar days) and longer-term requirements (bench inspections within 600 flight hours or 12 calendar months) and establishes repeat intervals and a mandatory replacement deadline (before accumulating 3,000 flight hours or 36 months after 28 July 2004) where applicable (Compliance 1.c; Compliance 2.c).
